Building community can be challenging, but also extremely valuable. By connecting with other freelancers, you can learn from their experiences, get support, motivation, encouragement, find new opportunities, and even improve your health.

Freelancing can sometimes be a lonely and isolating experience. You're often working from home, away from other people, and you may not have the same level of support as someone who works in a traditional office setting.

That's where building a community of fellow freelancers comes in. A community can provide you with support, encouragement, and advice. It can also help you stay motivated and on track.

Here are some of the benefits of building a community of fellow freelancers:

  • Support: When you're feeling down or discouraged, a community can be there to offer support. They can listen to your problems and offer advice. They can also help you celebrate your successes.
  • Encouragement: A community of fellow freelancers can also remind you that you're not alone and that you can do this. They can also help you stay motivated and on track.
  • Advice: A community is an excellent place to share experiences and insights, which can help you avoid making the same mistakes. They can also help you find new opportunities and clients.
  • Motivation: When you see other people succeeding, it can inspire you to keep going. You can also learn from the mistakes of others, which can help you avoid making the same ones.

Studies show that being in community with others is beneficial for both our physical and mental health and those who are part of a community are more likely to be happy and healthy, live longer, and be successful in their careers.

Here are three studies (of many) that support this:

University of California, Berkeley study, published in the journal Social Science & Medicine in 2006, found that people who are part of a community are more likely to be happy and healthy. The study looked at data from over 10,000 people and found that those who were part of a community had lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. They also had lower rates of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

Harvard University study, published in the journal The American Journal of Public Health in 2004, found that people who have strong social ties are more likely to live longer. The study looked at data from over 2,000 people and found that those who had the strongest social ties were 50% less likely to die during the study period than those who had the weakest social ties.

University of Chicago study, published in the journal Administrative Science Quarterly in 2008, found that people who are part of a community are more likely to be successful in their careers. The study looked at data from over 10,000 people and found that those who were part of a community were more likely to be promoted, earn higher salaries, and be satisfied with their jobs.

Building a community of fellow freelancers can be a game-changer. But if you're uncertain as to where to start, here are some ideas for activities that freelancers can participate in to build community with other freelancers:

Attend local meetups and events. There are many meetups and events held specifically for freelancers in most cities. These events are a great way to meet other freelancers in your area, learn about new opportunities, and get advice from experienced freelancers. Here are some specific resources to investigate:

  • Meetup: Meetup is a website where people can find and join groups based on their interests. There are many Meetup groups for freelancers, where you can meet other freelancers in your area, learn about new opportunities, and get advice from experienced freelancers.
  • Freelancers Union: The Freelancers Union is a non-profit organization that advocates for the rights of freelancers. The Freelancers Union has a website and a national conference where freelancers can connect with each other, learn about new opportunities, and get advice from experienced freelancers.
  • Upwork: Upwork is a freelancing platform where freelancers can find and work on projects. Upwork hosts events in major cities around the world where freelancers can connect with each other, learn about new opportunities, and get advice from experienced freelancers.
  • Coworking spaces: Coworking spaces are shared office spaces where freelancers can rent a desk or a private office. Many coworking spaces host events for their members, where freelancers can connect with each other, learn about new opportunities, and get advice from experienced freelancers.
Consider joining online communities. There are many online communities for freelancers, such as Slack channels, groups, and forums. These communities can be a great way to connect with other freelancers from all over the world, share advice, and find work.

Start a blog or podcast. Blogging and podcasting are great ways to share your expertise with other freelancers and build a following. You can also use your blog or podcast to connect with other freelancers and collaborate on projects.

Offer to mentor other freelancers. Mentoring is a great way to give back to the freelance community and help other freelancers succeed. You can mentor other freelancers in your field or in a different field.

Volunteer your time to a freelance organization. There are many freelance organizations that need volunteers. Volunteering your time is a great way to give back to the freelance community and make a difference.

Additionally, it can also be important to:

  • Be open to meeting new people. One of the best ways to build community is to be open to meeting new people.
  • Be willing to share your knowledge. When you share your knowledge with others, you build trust and rapport. This can lead to new opportunities and referrals.
  • Be supportive of others. When you support other freelancers, you create a positive and welcoming environment.

There are many ways to build a community of fellow freelancers. By connecting with other freelancers, you can get the support, encouragement, and advice you need to succeed in your freelance career. Additionally, you'll receive the satisfaction of helping others to succeed - all things that are good for your mental/physical health and success!
