The Power of Gratitude: Boost Your Productivity and Motivation

Written by Susan Jenks | 21 March, 2023

The transformative power of gratitude can have a profound effect on how we approach our work.  In fact, there is a growing body of research that supports the positive impact of expressing gratitude on motivation, productivity, and well-being.

It's easy to get caught up in the daily grind of work, deadlines, and client management. Sometimes, it can feel like you're on a never-ending hamster wheel, always chasing the next project or paycheck. But what if there was a way to break out of that cycle and feel more motivated and productive? What if something as simple as expressing gratitude could make a difference in your career?

Gratitude is the act of expressing appreciation and thankfulness for the people, experiences, and things in our lives. It's an acknowledgment of the good things that we have, rather than focusing on what we lack. Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can lead to improved mental and physical health, increased happiness, and stronger relationships. But how does it relate to our work?

Expressing gratitude can help us in several ways.

Here are just a few:

  1. It shifts our perspective: When we express gratitude, we focus on the positive aspects of our work and lives. We're less likely to get bogged down by negative thoughts or setbacks, and more likely to see opportunities and possibilities.

  2. It boosts our motivation: When we feel grateful for the work that we have, we're more likely to approach it with enthusiasm and energy. We're less likely to procrastinate or half-heartedly complete tasks.

  3. It improves our relationships: When we express gratitude to our clients, colleagues, or mentors, we build stronger connections and trust. We're more likely to receive positive feedback and support, which can lead to more opportunities and referrals.

Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can lead to a range of benefits, including improved mental health, stronger relationships, and greater life satisfaction. A study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that participants who wrote letters expressing gratitude to others experienced an increase in happiness and life satisfaction that lasted for weeks after the intervention. (Wood, A. M., Froh, J. J., & Geraghty, A. W. (2010). Gratitude and well-being: A review and theoretical integration. Clinical Psychology Review)

In terms of motivation and productivity, expressing gratitude can have a profound effect on how we approach our work. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that participants who expressed gratitude for their work were more likely to be motivated and engaged in their tasks than those who didn't. (Grant, A. M., & Gino, F. (2010) In addition, a studies find that employees who receive gratitude from their supervisors have higher levels of job satisfaction and productivity.

So, how can someone incorporate gratitude into their daily routines?

Here are a few ideas:

  1. Start a gratitude journal. Research has shown that regularly recording what we're grateful for can increase positive emotions and improve overall well-being. Additionally, expressing gratitude to clients, colleagues, and mentors can strengthen relationships and lead to more opportunities. Each day, write down three things that you're grateful for in your work and life.

  2. Say thank you: Whenever someone helps you or does something that you appreciate, say thank you. This can be in person, over email, or through a handwritten note. It shows that you value their contributions and reinforces positive behaviors.

  3. Take a gratitude break: When you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed, take a break and reflect on what you're grateful for. This could be a quick meditation, a gratitude list, or simply closing your eyes and focusing on your breath.

  4. Practice gratitude with others: Join a gratitude challenge on social media or start a gratitude circle with other freelancers. This can help you stay accountable and inspire you with new ideas for expressing gratitude.

Expressing gratitude can have a powerful impact on our motivation and productivity as freelancers. By shifting our perspective, boosting our motivation, and improving our relationships, gratitude can help us thrive in our work and lives. Try incorporating some of these gratitude practices into your daily routine and see how it can transform your freelance career.
